Product FAQs

Which Product do you have a question regarding?

General Glass Info

Q. How much does glass Weigh?

A. Check out our Glass Weight Calculator.

Q. Can Glass be Recut or Reworked once Toughened?

A. Once glass has been toughened / tempered it cannot be reworked. Trying to do so will result in the glass breaking into hundreds of small pieces.

Table Tops / Protectors

Q. Which Thickness of glass do i need?

A. The glass thickness you require depends on the application, for example, if you simply want a piece of glass to lay on top of an existing table top, 4mm or 6mm will be adequate. However if you intend the glass to make up the actual Table Top as opposed to just protecting an existing surface, we recommend that this should be made from 10mm thick glass or above.

Q. What is "Crystal Clear" glass?

A. Crystal Clear glass is the clearest type of glass available. When viewed from the edge the glass appears to be a light blue colour in comparison to Clear glass which appears green.

Q. What are "Radius Corners" and do i need them?

A. Radius Corners are simply corners which have been rounded / curved to remove the point at each corner. These are useful mainly when the glass has an overhang and could be accidently walked into, as having a radius corner will ensure safety.

Q. My Table is an irregular shape, how can i order this?

A. For more complex shapes, the best method is to produce a template using Lining Paper. By laying the table on to the paper, you can then trace the shape required. This can then be posted to us along with your contact details, which we will use to provide you with a quotation.

Post Address - Glasstops UK, 12 Murrayfield Road, Union Park Industrial Estate, Fifers Lane, Norwich, NR6 6NQ

Q. Can metal fixings be attached to the underside of the glass?

A. Using UV Adhesive, we can attach Metal fixings directly to the glass, this can then allow screws to fix the glass in place while keeping the top surface of the glass clear of obstruction.

Q. Are all of the edges safe?

A. We machine a profiled and polished finish on every edge as standard, so there will be no trace of sharpness found on cut glass.

Q. Is the Glass Toughened?

A. We Toughen all of our glass as standard. The only exception to this is when the size of the glass falls below 250mm x 250mm or the glass is to be produced from either Laminate or Mirror.

Q. What are "Clear Rubber Feet / Pads"?

A. These are small rubber feet which can be applied to the glass to help stand the glass off of hard surfaces such as Metal. These are included for free with all orders placed on the Table Top / Protector pages. These self adhesive pads are approximately 6mm Diameter with a height of 1mm.

Coloured Splashbacks / Wall Coverings

Q. What is the best way to get a quotation?

A. We require the following in order to provide you with an accurate quotation:

  • Approximate sizes of each panel required
  • Number of Socket or Switch cut outs required
  • A photo of the areas to have glass installed
  • Template and Fit service is required or Supply and Deliver
  • To be made from a standard Glasstops UK Colour or to be Colour Matched to a Paint reference

Q. Can i have a colour outside of your Standard Range?

A. We can produce coloured glass to almost any colour, so if you can provide us with a reference such as a Dulux name / code, or even provide us with a sample to match to, we can work from this.

Q. What is the maximum length of Splashback in one piece?

A. We manufacture our glass from 3210mm x 2250mm stock sheets, so the maximum length we are able to offer is 3204mm in a single length. Usually the limiting factor on a panel size tends to be access to the area (getting the panel from outdoors to the room where the glass is to be installed).

Q. Are all of the edges safe?

A. We machine a profiled and polished finish on every edge as standard, so there will be no trace of sharpness found on cut glass.

Q. What thickness of glass is used for splashbacks and wall panels?

A. Typically we produce these items in 6mm thick glass.

Q. Is the Glass Toughened?

A. We Toughen all of our glass as standard. The only exception to this is when the size of the glass falls below 250mm x 250mm or the glass is to be produced from either Laminate or Mirror.

Worktops

Q. What Thickness are your Worktops made from?

A. We manufacture our worktops from 10mm and 19mm Thick glass. We recommend 19mm is used as this is much closer to a standard worktop thickness of 30mm and also provides the strength necessary to make overhanging areas possible.

Q. How durable are Glass Worktops?

A. So long as the worktops are not abused (throwing keys on to them for example) your worktop should appear as new as the day it was installed.

Should the worktop become scratched, it is possible to work the surface using polish removal kits.

It is advised that protectors are used when placing hot items on the worktop instead of directly to the worktop surface.

Q. Can i have a colour outside of your Standard Range?

A. We can produce coloured glass to almost any colour, so if you can provide us with a reference such as a Dulux name / code, or even provide us with a sample to match to, we can work from this.

Shower Screens and Doors

Q. Can Glasstops UK supply all the Hardware and Fixings required?

A. We can produce complete shower kits for you to assemble along with the glass having all required notches and holes.

Q. What thickness of glass should be used?

We recommend that all glass to be used as shower screens or doors should be 10mm, as this provides the best strength without increasing the weight to a point where installation becomes difficult.

Shelving

Q. What thickness of glass should i use for a shelf?

A. We would recommend the use of 10mm thick glass if you are unsure of which thickness you require, because at this thickness the glass is strong enough for almost any application of this nature. The required thickness really comes down to what you intend to place on the shelf, the size of the shelf itself and how the shelf is to be installed.

Q. Are all of the edges safe?

A. We machine a profiled and polished finish on every edge as standard, so there will be no trace of sharpness found on cut glass.

Mirrors

Q. Can i have Mirrors near a heat source (e.g. Behind a hob)?

A. You cannot have standard untoughened mirrors in close proximity of a heat source, however we can produce Toughened Mirrors which are heat resistant. Unfortunately due to the Toughening process, small imperfections can be found in the mirror surface on close inspection, but this is harder to spot when specifying tinted toughened mirrors (such as smoked or bronze).

Q. Are all of the edges safe?

A. We machine a profiled and polished finish on every edge as standard, so there will be no trace of sharpness found on cut glass.

Q. Can designs be engraved?

A. We are able to produce mirrors with designs by either Machining the surface or by means of Sandblasting. In either case we would ask you to email us a diagram of what is required. If you have a CAD design saved, we would ask for this to be sent to us in a DXF format.

Q. Can Shaped Bevelled Mirrors be manufactured?

A. We are one of the few glass companies able to manufacture shape bevelled glass. We often undertake work such as replacing an old broken vanity mirror to match the remaining panels for example. We would require a template or a diagram with measurements for us to follow.

Balustrading

Q. Which Thickness of glass do i need?

A. For us to be able to advise which glass thickness is required, we need the following information:

  • Where the Glass to be installed
  • Whether a Handrail is to be installed
  • A photo of the areas to have glass installed
  • Whether this is a Domestic or Commercial installation

From the above information we can advise the Thickness and Glass specification you require. We also now offer Toughened Laminate, enabling us to produce Glass Balustrading for all possible purposes.
